TODAY is Eid Ul-Fitr, a day of historical importance in the lives of Muslims throughout the world.

It is a day of thanksgiving during which Muslims assemble in a brotherly and joyful atmosphere to offer their gratitude to the Almighty Allah for helping them to fulfil their spiritual obligations.

On this auspicious occasion, both the orthodox and Ahmadi Muslims, have every cause to rejoice, having gone through a month-long fast and prayers, to ask for forgiveness from Allah.

As usual, the day has been declared a public holiday in Ghana, in view of the importance the government attaches to the event.

As has been the trend, Muslims throughout the country will say special prayers for the nation and its leaders, for Allah to imbue them with the strength and courage to manage its affairs in a more committed and devoted manner.

This nation requires maximum peace to develop. Without peace, the laudable aims and objectives of the government cannot be achieved.

Therefore, the focus of this year’s celebration should be peace as a prerequisite for the nation’s development. Building and ensuring peace is a collective responsibility which we cannot afford to underrate.

On this special occasion, it is important to emphasise that this beautiful nation, Ghana, belongs to us all, and it behoves every citizen to protect and cherish it, with a greater amount of discipline.

We therefore appeal to our Muslim brothers and sisters to continue to pray to Allah to grant this nation wisdom and understanding, so that our political leaders can lead us on the path of righteousness.

As the nation prepares for next year’s general elections, we plead with our Muslim friends and indeed all the faithful, to pray for unity and cohesion among our politicians as they seek the people’s mandate to lead the nation.

Let us bury our differences and forge ahead in unity, in the quest for a better Ghana.

We wish also to caution the youth to observe the occasion with sobriety and avoid over-zealous and other negative behaviours which can mar the beauty and joy of the celebration.

The youth are also advised against riding motorbikes and driving vehicles in a reckless manner to cause unnecessary accidents which may lead to loss of lives on this historic occasion.

The entire nation wishes the Muslim fraternity Barka da Sala.
May the Almighty Allah bless us all!
