A ground breaking ceremony has been performed for work to start on the construction of a 24-classroom project for the Al-Rayaan International School, a private co-educational institution at East Legon, Accra.

The project consists of an administration block, a library, science laboratories and multi-purpose hall.

The two school blocks of 12 classrooms each will accommodate 640 primary and secondary school pupils and students.

In an address read on his behalf, the Minister of Education, Mr. Alex Tettey-Enyo reiterated the government’s policy to give all Ghanaian children of school going-age equal opportunity to receive quality education.

The address was read by Mrs. Adelaide Annor-Kuma, Director, Policy Monitoring and Evaluation of the ministry.

Mr. Tettey-Enyo called on the private sector to support the government in the quest to promote quality education delivery.

He urged all stakeholders in education to show deeper concern for the moral and spiritual upliftment of the country’s youth so that the youth could distance themselves from negative tendencies such as internet fraud indiscipline, drug abuse, pornography and tobacco smoking.

Mr. Tetteh-Enyo commended the Ghana Society for Islamic Education and Reformation, the management of the school, foresight in planning to build an ultra-modern, permanent complex.

He noted that the association had contributed to the education of Ghanaians, particularly the Moslem youth, through the establishment of institutions such as the Madina Islamic School, Mankessim Islamic School, Ghana-Lebanon Islamic Secondary School (GLISS) in Accra and the Muslim Teacher Training Institute.

Haj Shawki Fattal, the president and Haj Nouhad Kalmoni, board chairman of the school, explained that the project would be completed in the next few years and that a number of its facilities would be open for use by the larger East Legon Community.

According to them, the school currently offers classes up to Grade 6 and would open a new grade every academic year starting with Grade 7 in September 2010.

“The school adopts the British National Curriculum and is poised to offer the highest international education standards, in line with its motto: “The Gateway to Knowledge,” they said.

The dignitaries present included Imam Shuaib Abubakar who deputised for the Chief Imam; H. E. Rafiq Abu Dalfa, the Palestinian Ambassador; H. E. Larbi Kattii, the Algerian Ambassador; H. E. Ghassan Abdel-Khalek, the Lebanese Ambassador; Haj Bassam Husseini, Vice-President of GSIER; Father Fadi Boustani, Priest of the Osu Maronite Church; and Dr. Sahar el-Husseini, Principal of the Al-Rayaan International School.
