The Municipal Chief Executive of the East Akim Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region, Mr. Simon Peter Asirifi, has advised educational institutions to overlook profit- making in their quest to provide quality education for the citizenry.
He admonished that both the rich and the poor should be given equal opportunity to access quality education in the various institutions.
He was addressing the launch of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Akim Commercial College (AKIMCOCO) at Akyem New Tafo, last Saturday.
The golden jubilee anniversary, slated for November, this year, is on the theme; “AKIMCOCO @ 50: Past, present and future, positive prospects”.
Activities lined-up for the celebration include a photo exhibition, seminars, debates, quiz competitions, sports and games, launch of anniversary cloth, clean up campaigns and a choral music festival.
There would also be a remembrance service, dedication of musical instruments, a health walk, blood donation, a float, a dinner dance and a thanks giving service.
Mr. Asirifi advised the students to take advantage of opportunities offered them in the school and make the best use of their time “as time lost cannot be regained”.
He advised the management of the school to ensure that teachers upgrade themselves and aer prepared to delivery effectively to the students.
The headmaster of AKIMCOCO, Mr. Jonathan Dzamasi, said the school which was set up to train middle level accounting and secretarial personnel, among others has over the years upgraded its programmes, to prepare students for tertiary institutions.
He indicated that the school had trained a lot of public servants, bankers and secretaries in the country, is still faced with some challenges such as lack of a school bus, science laboratory equipment and deplorable road leading to the campus.
Mr. Dzamasi has therefore appealed to the government to help solve these challenges, in order that the school continues to offer quality education to the youth
