In order to create the educational infrastructure needed to support a thriving economy, there is the need for both public and private universities in the country to adopt a shared commitment to increase the value placed on education and improve the educational programmes at the institutions, Reverend. Professor Samuel K. Adjepong, Principal, Methodist University College has said.

He said countries such as Japan, Korea and Singapore have made rapid economic progress because of heavy investment in education and training.

“The overall development of a society is largely determined by the quality of its education, particularly higher education. A well-educated, well trained population could propel a nation towards rapid economic growth”.

Professor Samuel was speaking at the 66th Graduation Ceremony of the Trinity Theological Seminary on the theme: ‘’ The Role of Private Universities in National Development’’.

Two hundred and seven graduating students who have fulfilled all the requirement of their various programmes of study were awarded with certificates ranging from Certificate in Ministry to Master of Theology.

They are in the following programmes: Certificate in Ministry 67; Diploma in Theology, 65; Bachelor of Theology 22; Master of Arts in Ministry, 29; Master of Divinity, 15; and Master of Theology 12.

Mr. Samuel, who spoke on Partnership of Private and Public Universities for National Development, said private and public institutions in the country could work together in partnership to design and deliver programmes that open access to needy and deserving students and that show the promise of addressing critical skill gaps, he stated.

“We need a long- term strategy of human resource development that is shaped by the needs of the country. This will require the intellectual, financial and infrastructural resources of a comprehensive co-ordinate higher education system that embraces public and private institutions working in close partnership with the private sector and a broad range of government agencies”.

Underscoring the relevance of higher education, he said it helps individuals achieve their potential and enhances the economic development of a country.

“Higher education prepares a quality workforce by offering instructional programmes matching the need of business and industry, conducting research and helping individuals to learn throughout their lives”.

He argued that a large number of qualified applicants fail to gain admission into the public institutions because of the limited capacities of the institutions. That, he, said among others has contributed to the failure of the bodies to meet the market demand.

Professor Samuel appealed to the government to strengthen the entire production capacity of the higher education sector and advance steps to implement policies that provides financial subsidies to private providers as is the case of a growing number of countries.

“It is necessary for the private institutions to be accorded the necessary support and encouragement from the government and the supervising Universities in order to make the private- public partnership (PPP) maximally productive to the benefit of the country”.

Reverend Professor Samuel in reference to Paul in Philippians 4:9 advised the graduands to lead simple, honest and transparent lives and always pray for grace to walk the talk.
