Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese DCE Warns Headteachers In District

The District Chief Executive of Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese in the Central Region, William Atta-Mends, had threatened to facilitate the transfer of headteachers of schools in the district which scored less than 40 per cent pass in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) over the past three years.

He explained that, it was unacceptable for the heads to continue with the abysmal performance of pupils in such an important examination that shape the future of the youth.
Mr. Atta-Mends issued the threat when the assembly presented items to the Muslim community in the towards this year’s Ramadan fast on Friday.

The items presented include 35 bags of rice, 15 bags of maize.

Mr. Atta-Mends indicated that he would liaise with the Ghana Education service (GES) at both the national and regional levels to cause the transfer of such headteachers.

He noted that the exercise of carried out would be in the best interest of the students, headteachers and the district in general.

“This should not be interpreted as political victimization by people,” he added.
The district, according to the DCE, had 25 per cent pass in the BECE results released by the West African Examination council (WAEC) this year, down from the 37 per cent pass mark recorded in 2010.

“This performance is unacceptable and we must work to improve subsequent examinations conducted by WAEC “he stressed.

Mr. Atta-Mends noted that only three schools in the district had a 100 per cent pass mark in the examination this year.

He urged parents to invest in the education of their children and also monitor their academic progress at school.

Parental neglect, he said, also affect the performance of students and cautioned that the assembly would devise a way of ensuring that parent take up their responsibilities.

Later, a headteacher, who spoke on condition of anonymity to “Times”, questioned the rationale behind the threat by the DCE.

Most pupils, she said were not serious at school as some also abandon classes to help their parents in the farms or engaged in other economic ventures.

She therefore proposed the adoption of holistic approach by the assembly in raising the standard of education in the district.
