A RELIEF FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLE OWNERS

THE announcement by the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company that a special designed Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders for commercial drivers will be introduced next year, will serve as a major relief for commercial drivers.

The Chief Executive of the GCMC, Mrs Betty Morny told the Times that the decision was prompted by the increasing demand for automobile LPG cylinder by commercial drivers.

“It is also to stop the practice whereby trotro and other commercial drivers improvise the domestic cylinders for use in their vehicles,” she said.

In recent times, a number of commercial vehicles, mostly taxis, resorted to the use of domestic LPG gas cylinders in their vehicles to cut down the cost of fuel.

The practice poses a serious danger since the improvised cylinders can cause explosion because the domestic cylinders are not meant for mobile use.

The danger is that the occupants of these commercial vehicles are at risk in the event of explosion of the cylinders.

Considering the alarming rate of fire outbreaks in the country, especially those involving gas, it is indeed, necessary to avoid any practices that can seriously endanger the lives of the people.

Much as these commercial drivers may want to cut down on fuel cost and make profits, they must also ensure they don’t put the lives of the people at risk.

It is in view of this that the Times welcomes steps being taken by the GCMC to ensure the production of auto LPG gas cylinders of high standards for commercial vehicles.

Another refreshing development is the intention of the company to go into the manufacture of fire extinguisher cylinders to reduce the importation of the product to save foreign exchange for the country.

The upsurge of gas explosions in the country with their serious ramifications of death, demands that gas users are educated to avoid pitfalls associated with the gas industry.

We are therefore, encouraged by the assurance of the company that it would set the pace for public education on the proper use of LPG gas cylinders as well as the manufacture of high quality and durable LPG gas cylinders.
