About 28 youth in the Nadowli District of the Upper West Region who have completed apprenticeship training in various fields have been provided with tools and equipment valued at GH¢10,000 to establish their own business.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the African Development Bank (AFDB) provided GH¢8,000 towards the programme while the Nadowli District Assembly supplemented with GH¢2,000.

The Business Advisory Centre (BAC) of the National Board of Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) through the Rural Enterprise Project is implementing the programme.

Items provided the youth included sewing machines, hairdressing equipment, tools for motor mechanics, auto electrical, carpentry, masonry, welding, vulcanizing, leather works and spraying tools.

Addressing the beneficiaries at a ceremony here on Monday, the District Chief Executive for Nadowli, Mr. Abu Kansangbata said two years ago 36 youth made up of 12 males and 24 males were provided similar packages to lead self-supporting lives.

Mr. Kansangbata said the assembly had set up a monitoring mechanism to ensure that beneficiaries use the tools and equipment for the intended purpose and hoped that the new beneficiaries would put them to good use to better their lot and reduce poverty among them.

The District Chief Executive said that with the provision of tools and equipment there would be no justification for beneficiaries to travel down south to engage in menial jobs.

The Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of REP, Mr. Samuel Kwakye said the project aimed at poverty alleviation that targeted the vulnerable and poor especially women and the youth. This would increase incomes, employment and production through viable small-scale economic ventures and technology support.

He said one vital area the project emphasized on was capacity building for beneficiaries through business training workshops, employable skills training, technology promotion and technical skill training programmes.

Mr. Kwakye advised the beneficiaries to demonstrate a high level of commitment by ensuring the judicious use of the tools and equipment for the benefit of society.

He called for co-operation and support from parents and the public to enable them run successful enterprises and businesses.
