Twenty-six suspects made up of 19 men and seven women have been arrested at Apesokubi, near Worawora in the Biakoye District of the Volta region, for possessing firearms and other offensive weapons.
The items recovered included 13 single-barreled shot guns, one locally manufactured pistol, 85 hire cartridges, 83 empty shell cartridges, a quantity of gun power and three cutlasses.
The Volta Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Alex Bedie, told reporters here yesterday that on December 29 last year, there was a shooting incident at Apesokubi in connection with a protracted chieftaincy and land dispute.
In the melee, some unidentified gun men opened fire on Nana Afefle Kwabeng Kitikpo, paramount chief of Apossou ,thus, severely wounding him and in the process killing Nicholas Ane the chief’s cousin.
A Honda saloon car belonging to the chief was also burnt to ashes, DCOP Bedie said.
According to DCOP Bedie, a team of policemen was dispatched to the town to maintain law and order but no arrest was made at the time.
The Police Commander said as part of their investigations, the police had a hint which led to the arrest of the culprits.
Consequently, a team of policemen undertook a search in the town on Tuesday dawn that led to the retrieval of the weapons and other offensive weapons.
DCOP Bedie said “all the 26 suspects have been placed in police custody at Ho,” adding, that those found culpable would be put before court after further investigations.
Violence broke out at Apesokubi on December 29 last year on the eve of the celebration of their annual Owa festival.
